DICKINSON — For more than four months, the City of Dickinson has been getting comfortable operating in its new location in the heart of the downtown district. As a way of welcoming the public to the newest city building, City Hall, various departments will gather for a grand opening and career expo.
The open house is set for 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at 38 First St. W., featuring tours, informational booths, an inflatable bouncy house from the Dickinson Police Department, job fair and a street display of various equipment from all of the different departments. Interim City Administrator
noted that this is something the city has long awaited since
into the former American Bank Center building in January.
“We’ve been getting asked a lot by members of the community for a tour of the facility, and especially a lot of the business owners and local businesses, they’ve always asked for tours of the facility. So one thing we wanted to do was let’s have an open house and open it up to the public so they can come and see what this building looks inside and what the city of Dickinson has done to remodel it,” Dassinger said. “So we kind of started with that idea. Then we started talking about (how) it’d be great if we could do a job fair as well because there are a lot of positions open throughout the city. So we’re trying to tie in a lot of different ideas and hope to make it a good evening here at City Hall.”
This will be an opportunity for the public to check out what City Hall has to offer as well as the different services that are available, Dassinger said, adding that a few city employees will direct guests on where each department is located such as the engineering or assessing departments. All the department heads — from police, fire and public works — will be one site to answer any questions the public may have. With several job openings at the City of Dickinson, the job fair will also serve as an opportunity for people who want to build on their careers, he added.
“I think it’s important to showcase… (that) the city moved from our existing City Hall to this one. A lot of people had questions. What are they going to do with this building? How are they going to occupy it?” Dassinger said.
The building is also a piece of Dickinson’s history, Dassinger said, explaining that it’s changed faces over the years.
“(From) a historic perspective, I think it’s important to showcase some of that. You can see in this office how there’s some of the old plaques of the city and over there you can see the original founding fathers of the city. So I think it’s important to show off some of that historic perspective as well, and to show the public that this is what we’ve done with taxpayer dollars,” he said.
The old City Hall, located at 99 Second St. E., was “pretty crammed for space,” Dassinger said, noting that there was a lack of offices for all of the different departments and employees. This new space allowed for the City of Dickinson to spread out and take advantage of the historic building, he added.
Though it’s taken a little time for city employees to adjust to their new environment, Dassinger said that the new space has become more routine.
“At first, I think it just took a little while for everybody to adjust to the new environment. I think everybody’s made adjustments. And I really think everybody feels at home here now and calling it home as a workplace,” he said.
With more than a month under his belt after stepping into the role of city administrator, Dassinger is hoping for a good turnout.
“I think it’s important to come out; we hope the weather’s nice. Come and see our City Hall; it’s a beautiful facility. See what the city has done. And I think most importantly, have an opportunity to talk with our department heads. Talk with our fire chief and other departments and ask them questions, ‘What do you see as some of the challenges in our community?’ And hopefully they can showcase their department and… tell the community some of the great things that they’re doing.”
